Editor's Preface T HIS BOOK IS LONG OVER DUE. Whether it is the most wanted book in the Korean Community or just a book to have or not to have doesn't matter, the purpose and objective to which this book was conceived is very clear. There has been a great demand fora directory for and about the Korean Community in California, where thousands of Korean descendants live and work, taking an important part of making the giant society of ours today. The Koreans in America have a long and dramatic history of their own • However, it is not my intention in this book to dramatize the cause and iden tity of Koreans, or single out people of Kareem ancestry from the rest of Oriental in American society. But I hope to create a positive atmosphere through which a better understanding, more knowledge, cooperation and friendship among Koreans as wel I as with others can be furthered. A complexity of human relation among national groups can cause dan gerous tens ions and mis trust in absense of proper know I edge and understanding of one another. There are differences existing among human groups,no mat ter how insignificant. The fact that the American social, cultural civiliza tion is a result of various contributions from all these different national and ethnic groups is itself a proof of the important position the Korean Commu nity in America has taken in the past and more positive influence in the fu - ture as well. Korea has an unique cultural heritage which all Korean de scendants must cherish and be proud of. The world has become smaller as modern technology advances, and we are welded into this large world com munity by the course of I ife. Our proper goal must be in contributing to the world of our talent, promoting our proud cultural heritage, and at the end, all our honest efforts will resolve conflicts which result from social, cultur al, political, and psychological differences among human groups in this small yet distant world community today. 6 In the community life, an individual contribution, no matter how small it may be, accounts fora greater result than that of a big nation for the world community. The individuals make up the community, and without mutual confidence, understanding, and true communication among them the commu nity life could only mean a constant threat to the people and begets nothing but a mistrust. A mutual confidence and true communication among human groups are a prerequisite for world peace and. maintenance of harmonious world community. This book is therefore directed toward achieving the goal of true communication among members of the Korean Community, and we are very confident that it will serve you in the fullest extend. In making this book we have encountered many difficulties and problems. The work involved in compiling the directory is tremendous. The Koreans live much scattered area in California, and have diversified interest and oc cupations. There was no established channel of communication for Koreans in California, and this caused an extreme difficulty in reaching everyone to include in this directory. In addition to the normal administrative chore we have faced some opposition and rejection from friends whom we sought some support and advice. But, to my surprise, I learned that it is not always un pleasant experience to be opposed and rejected, particularly in community work---it gives me a strength and a good reason to work harder. I believe every endeavor has its compensation, and I have already receiv ed mine for this project---it is very personal one.--- renewed friendship and confidence in new friends and a new faith in the future of the Korean Commu nity in America. To list numerous friends who have encouraged and helped me in this pro ject is almost impossible. Without the cooperation from individual members of the Korean Community this book wouldhaveneverbeen possible. In com pleting this book, I am greatlyindebtedtomany good friends. I am a novice in the publishing books, inexperienced, and the least prepared to take up this important task. I am especially indebted to my co-workerChun Soo Pyun with whom the idea of making this book was first envisaged. Without his unselfish devotion for this project this book would have never been finished. No word of praise wil I suffice his energy, sincerity, dedication and service for the cause of the Korean Community in California. I am very thankful to Honorable Edmund G. Brown, the Governor of this great state, and Honorable Kwang Soo Ahn, Consul General, for sending the messages for this special occasion. I am indebted to Honorable Alfred Song, a distinguished citizen of Califomia, whoseencouragement has lighted a candle of reassurance at the very moment of disappointment and difficulty,. I thank him, also, for writing the introduction to this book. I thank Dr. Yong Sam Ch_o whose article has enlightened this book with a proper perspective and timely observation. I should like to express my pro found appreciation to Mr. Paul C. Johnson, Editor of Lane Book Company, for permitting me to reproduce a fine article about California from his book, "Beautiful California." - 7 For a personal support in connection with the whole project, I owe much to Miss Adrienne Reuter for reading themanuscripts and giving me with con structive criticism, comments and advi~e, and whom I relied heavily upon the planning and construction of the entire book. With all their help and active support, I took only a humble part of putting information and articles together into a book form .Finally, my sincere thanks to every member of the Korean Community in Southern and.Central California whose active support I have appreciated so much. March 1964 Hollywood, California Editor's Note: Alfred H. Song, 45, is a native of Hawaii. A graduate of the University of Southern California, where he earned the degrees of B.S ., LL.B., LL .M., he is the first Oriental to be elected to the California State Legislature and was the first of Korean origin to be licensed as a lawyer in Cal ifomia. He is the senior partner of the law firm of Song, Kell & Schwartz. 8 INTRODUCTION by Alfred H. Song ORIENTAL HERITAGE is to be commended for this most note worthy publication. Persons of Korean ancestry, as wel I as others of any oriental extraction, have until the recent past in California borne the oppression of certain discriminatory laws. One exceedingly un- fortunate era in California history was the reflection of alleged public sentiment through the enactment of the infamous "yellow peril 11 legislation. The Alien Land Law forbade property owner ship. The anti-miscegenous marriage law prohibited mixed mar riages. College graduates were denied equal employment op portunities, and racial restrictive covenants prevented desired acquisitions of homes. The development of greater tolerance and understanding was not, and can never be, fortuitous. Progress is necessari I y the product of diligent and unremitting effort. Americans of Korean descent have made many positive con-· tributions to the growth of California, socially as well as eco nomically. We are effectively represented in all professions and in many businesses. We are, today, individually and col lectively very much a part of the Cal ifornla society. 9 Bon. Voyage by Yong Sam Cho Ir IS THE glorious voyage of our life that we float the ship of associ ation and knowledge in the ocean of facts---where, what, when, who and why and how. This volume is designed to waive the expense of the first four for us. Now, one finds that society rather than another fellow man is his neighbor. The joys and sorrows, ecstasies and agonies, and heaven and cross of a lonely man touches no one. Virtue will catch by contact. Contact has, in many human relations, triumphed and is triumphing over prejudice nad bigotry which are the outgrowths of ignorance. There is therefore wisdom in the saying of Durant, that knowledge is the eye of desire and can become the pilot of the soul. As soon as a fact has entered our minds, it gives a I ight that makes us see a sea of other areas of intellect which we have never before preceived. Whatever our intellectual calling, no sort of learning is unpacific to --- a·11 varieties of knowledge blend with and enlgihte11. one kind of knowl age. We cannot be buried in obscurity and darkness. This volume is ever welcome by those who wish to know about and communicate with Koreans in the United States---not only those who are warmth and I ight in their homes, but also those who shine through the window into the night, as wel I as those who I ive for the good of their fellow men in cheerful responsibility and work. February 1964 California State College at Los Angeles 10 We1co:m.e -to -the ~o1de:n S-ta-te Special effects by Advance Reproduction Systems 1424 N. Wilcox - Los Angeles 28, Calif. 12 It is a great pleasure to greet members of the Korean Community in Southern California through the medium of the 1964 Year Book. California takes pride in its citizens of Korean ancestry. That pride is justified because of the contributions which those citizens have made to strengthening and en riching our life as a state. With a sense of responsibility and_dedication to California, our citizens of Korean descent have applied their skills and ~alents to the improvement of our economy and government and our society. For these contributions, I thank you and con gratulate you and offer my best wishes for con tinued service in the cause of a great state and a great society. EDMUND G. BROWN, Governor 13 Beautiful California In the richness of its diversity, the grandeur of its scenic attractions, and the excitement of its visual contrasts, California stirs those who know it to hyper bole and extravagant appreciation. If Californians tend to write or talk too much or too exuberantly about their state, bear with them-for they are enraptured by the natural beauty of their golden land. In a very real sense, this fortunate state compresses within its boundaries the scenic features of an entire continent. Seashore, desert, mountain ranges, naviga ble rivers, waterfalls, landlocked harbors, farming plains, glaciers, perpetual snow, slumbering volcanoes, lakes and inland seas-all are found within the spacious outline of the state. Most of the state's scenic diversity derives from the unique arrangement of its mountains, valleys, and rivers; its long shoreline that stretches a distance equivalent to that between Boston, Massachusetts, and Charleston, South Carolina; and the extremes in altitude and climate contained within its borders, ranging from elevations of minus 250 feet to 14,495 feet above sea level, from temperature extremes of a chilly minus 56° to a searing I 34°, ofrainfall ranging from a trace to 100 inches a year, and of snowfall that is unknown throughout most of the state but has been measured at 70 feet on a Sierra summit. The contrasts start at the surf line. Along its tortuous twelve-hundred miles of alternating beach and bluff, the coast stretches from a sunny, subtropical beachland, washed by temperate ocean currents, to fog-ridden wave-battered headlands in the north-from palm groves to conifer forests. A coastal shelf runs along beside the sea, squeezed between the mountains of the Coast Range and the ocean. In places, the shelf broadens out into open plains or river valleys where the major cities cluster; elsewhere, it narrows to a shallow ledge above the surf, forcing the scattered settlements to cling to the bluffs and the sides of the river inlets. Magnificent landlocked bays provide natural harbors for the port cities of San Diego and San Francisco; and where the engineering processes of geologic change have failed to serve man's interests, extensive ports have been dredged to form the harbors of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Reprinted from Beautiful California,© 1963 by Lane Book Company, Menlo Park, Calif: 14 A ser.ies of mountain chains, rising to the 14,000-foot climax of the Sierra Nevada escarpment, intercepts the Pacific's storms and draws down upon the western slopes the. rains that nurture the towering redwoods and the thousands of square miles of forest that blanket a third of the state. In the lower elevations, the forests grow in park-like groves of mixed evergreens and deciduous trees: redwoods, madrones, maples, oaks, cedars, firs, and laurels. In the fall they don a bright tartan of orange, amber, and rust, crossed with the dark green of the conifers, when autumn splashes the foliage. In the higher elevations, dense stands of pine, juniper, and fir sweep solidly over the mountainsides. Within the mountain system lie the gorges, craggy peaks, and the lakes and rivers that delight the eye with their tranquility or overwhelm the viewer with their austere grandeur: the jagged granite wonderland of the Trinity Alps, the gentle landscape of the Kern Plateau, the bold domes of Yosemite rising above the conifers, or azure-blue Lake Tahoe, cupped within a circle of forested mountains. From the heights, the rivers rush down to the sea, tumbling over the cliffs in long, thundering cascades, churning to whitewater as they race through the boulders in the canyon bottoms, and finally smoothing out for the last lap to the ocean. Nestled between the mountain ranges lie innumerable pastoral valleys, checkerboarded with green squares of row-crops, vineyards, pastures, and or chards irrigated by the natural runoff from the encircling heights or by water piped from the great catchbasin that stretches along the crest of the Sierra Ne vada. The vast trough of the Central Valley, largest of the agricultural valleys, covers a flatland 400 miles long and 50 wide in the heart of the state. Rich and fertile, the valley's great patchwork quilt of farms and ranches produces a sub stantial percentage of the nation's truck crops. A dozen rivers flow into the valley from the encompassing mountains, but only one leaves it through a gap in the Coast Range. The streams empty into two major rivers-the Sacramento and the San Joaquin-and these come together in a maze of sloughs, lakes, channels, and marshlands known as "The Delta" before making the solo run to the sea beyond the Golden Gate. Behind the mountain barrier, the wastes of the Mojave and Colorado Deserts fill the southeastern quarter of the state, Denied a proportional share of the rains by the intercepting mountains, the barren hills and plains are either seared free of vegetation or lightly clothed with the picturesque plants that are adapted to the hot, dry conditions. Where water has been piped to the parched soil, the desert is shaded by airy groves of date palms, covered with early crops of mel ons, lettuce, and cotton, or graced with oasis-like communities and resorts. Throughout this favored state, the wash of spring color offers a memorable sight. Starting early in the year in the desert, the wildflowers and native shrubs ,and trees give a preview of the coming spectacle with. a brief flash of color. · Th.e pastel tide moves into the coastal valleys, then _slowly climbs the hills and 15 William Aplin then the mountains, reaching timberline in the early fall, there to bloom until the killing frosts. In good years, carpets of orange poppies or blue lupine cover the open miles of the Central Valley or sweep over the high desert. Although most of California's visual appeal is in its natural landscape, some of its most spectacular sights are the products of man's handiwork. The challenge of the jumbled landforms themselves has produced the great bridges that span San Francisco Bay, the sweeping highways that snake through the mountain passes, and the white, storied city of San Francisco perched on its forty hills. The viewer is overwhelmed by the astonishing sweep of metropolitan Los Angeles, which turns into a sequined sea at night, and by the interweaving freeways that slice intricate patterns through the limitless city. The visitor long remembers the view of San Diego from Point Loma, the esplanade of Santa Barbara, and the windows of the Berkeley-Oakland hills reflecting the setting sun in \l. flashing mosaic. He recalls with pleasure the ordered sylvan perfection of the city parks, most notably Golden Gate Park in San Francisco and San Diego's widespread Balboa Park. He recalls the civic buildings that memorialize the tastes and aspirations of the major communities: Santa Barbara's Spanish courthouse, Marin County's remarkable memorial to Frank Lloyd Wright, Los Angeles' skyscraper of granite, and San Francisco's imposing civic center. 16 The buildings and mementos of California's romantic past add a nostalgic note to the landscape. The growth of the state has been so rapid and all-encom passing that the evidences of the early ways of life have been all but submerged. The few relics that have survived are doubly treasured for the very fact that they have escaped destruction and for the contrast and perspective they provide in a young land. South of Sonoma, the principal remainders are those left behind by the Spaniards, who occupied California as remote colonists of the Spanish and Mexican empires up to the time of the American take-over just before the Gold Rush. The territory belonged to Spain for nearly three centuries, but the Span iards left it alone for two hundred years and did not attempt to colonize it until the I 770's. In their eighty years' occupancy, they built missions, presidios, and haciendas in the eoastal valleys, close to rivers or to the ocean where the supply galleons touched port. Although these structures were built of soluble adobe and many were subsequently abandoned for decades, sotne have miraculously survived to the present day or have been restored to their original form. The simple, boldly proportioned mission buildings and ranch houses, with their shaded corridors, verdant patios, and bubbling fountains, still retain some of the gracious atmosphere of the days of the Dons. These fine old buildings have inspired periodic revivals of interest in Spanish architecture, reflected in a large number of Spanish-style public buildings and homes scattered over the state. The Spanish idyl was too good to last. More powerful nations than aging Spain had their sights trained on this domain, which was known to be well endowed but poorly defended. Russia established a colony at Bodega, I oo miles north of San Francisco in 1812, and the Spaniards were too weak to do more than protest. When Mexico revolted from Spain in 1822, California joined the rebel cause and became a province of the Empire of Mexico. Still remote from the seat of authority, the native Californios went their own way, enjoying the hospitable life of the ranchos and indulging in occasional bloodless revolutions. Americans began to trickle into the province by sea and by land, attracted by the tales carried east by the crews of the trading vessels that for years had been exchanging manufactured goods for the hides and tallow from the ranchos. In due time, the inevitable happened. United States military forces seized the territory in 1846 soon after the start of the War with Mexico. The Californios put up a brief but spirited resistance and then capitulated. The territory was ceded to the United States by the treaty ending the Mexican war in 1848, and two years later, Congress admitted California to the Union. The California that became a state in 1850 was quite different from the Cali fornia that the armed forces had seized four years earlier-for in this brief interval, the Gold Rush had begun, completely changing its character. The tides of Yankees and gold-seekers from all over the world that flooded into the sleepy little colony catapulted it from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century in a 17 few short years. Population jumped from 15,000 in 1847 to 380,000 in 1860. The center of commercial gravity shifted north from Monterey to San Francisco. The great Central Valley-almost completely ignored by the Spaniards-became overspread with farms and cattle ranches. Towns and cities, roads and rail lines, dams and flumes sprouted suddenly where none had existed before. The relics of these hectic years are clustered in certain sections of northern California, principally the Sierra foothills, where they decay in gentle dignity. Since most of the early buildings were abandoned after the Gold Rush faded, only a relatively small number remain to enchant the traveler, most of them having succumbed to the destructfon of the elements, fire, or the "borrowings" of later settlers. Where buildings were built of stone and iron, they have sur vived picturesquely to the present day. Unfortunately for antiquarians, the key city of the Gold Rush days, San Francisco, lost the relics of its tempestuous past in a series of conflagrations, climaxed by the holocaust of 1906. The Gold Rush launched the state on a dizzying course of spiraling growth that has continued with ups and downs ever since. The completion of the trans continental railroad in 1869 and its extension to southern California a few years later drew thousands of settlers to "the perfect paradise, the land of perpetual spring." Industries followed-oil, motion pictures, manufacturing, airplanes and people poured in to work or simply to live in this bountiful state. The floodtide of visitors and residents has been flowing into California for a century, as people have come to see for themselves if the state is as beautiful as advertised. They have come, have liked what they found, and have settled Martin Litton 18 down to man the industries and enjoy the western ways of living. But the tide continues without let-up, and in time the ceaseless flow may someday submerge the beauties of California as it has nearly obliterated the relics of its past. Most Californians have thus far fought vigorously to protect the natural beauties of their state against the onslaught, and it is to be hoped that this restraint will be as vigilantly continued by those newly arrived and yet to come. Meanwhile, for the long, present, this favored state still has more than its share of undisturbed beauty, more than any man can absorb in a summer, or a dozen summers, or a lifetime. Wilcox - Los Angeles 28, Calif. 22 History of Korea at Glimpse UNTIL A FEW YEARS AGO, the history of Korea attracted only a handful of men --- historian of the East, archaeologist, and Christian missionaries. Since the outbreak of the Korean War the whole world has become conscious of the existence of Korea, and watched her development carefully. It was not by the Koreans own choice that brought world attention to the tiny pen insula, but was an unescapable destiny in advancing the post war power struggles among p:>werful nations. A sudden awareness of the common fate and destiny, the people of the free world began to learn about Korea, open ing the doors of understanding, compassion and friendship. Any place can become a battle ground, and anyone can be a victim overnight in today's world. But Korea had more than her share of suffering in the past half a century. The chronological I ist of foreign aggressions, declared and unde clared, against the Korean people is impressively long and painfully recorded. The glory and the wound were mixed together in the Korean history, and sadly, there were more wounds, agony and suffering than there was glorious victory. Thousands of years of history of Korea cannot be written comprehensively in these few pages, nor in this book. It is merely an attempt to write. In order to understand the history, culture and people of Korea one must have a knowledge of the geography of the Korean peninsula. The Korean peninsula is about 500 miles in length, bounded by Manchuria on the north, and shares the Eastern Sea with Japan on the East and the Yellow Sea on the West of the penirsula. Mountainous in the north and rice-rich southern plains are characteristic of the land. Throughout the history of Korea the great powers surrounding the peninsula have attempted many times to control it. Korea's geographical- location among three di:>mi nating nations, China on the West, Russia on the North and Japan on the 23 East mad13 it impossible to remain isolated, politically, economically and culturally. There was constant power struggles among these three powerful nations, and actual collisions always took place on Korean soil. In the past the Korean peninsula served either as a stepping stone to Japan, or a bridge to the conquest of the rest of Asia, depending on which way the wind blew. To Koreans, no matter which direction the wind blew, either to in land or to the island, the sufferings were the same. As much as mankind is bound to the earth, Koreans have sustained, and the land is theirs to keep, and rightfully so. Archaeological study reveals that man lived in the Yellow River basin of China at least half a mill ion years ago. Some of them migrated into the peninsula of Korea in search for a more favorable climate and fruitful land. Occupying the principle river, these migrants I ived separately as tribal groups. There is more than one account of legendary beginning of Korea and about the founder, Tangkun. According to the most popular legend, a son of the Creator, Hwanung, came to the Taibaik Mountain, and transform ed a bear into a beautiful young woman. He was very much attracted by the woman, and she bore him a son, who is known to posterity as Tangkun, the grandson of the Creator. It all happened, according to the legend, about twenty-four centuries before the birth of Christ. Tangkun assumed power to rule from the Heaven, and named the land Chosun, the first Korean state, with its capital in Pyongyang. His dynasty ruled over twelve hundred years. The mythological theme of attributing the origin of a race to Heaven is very common to many peoples. The real history of Korea begins from the period of the three Kingdoms, about57B.C. The Three-Kingdoms were:Koguryo in northern Korea, Silla in Southeast Korea, and Paikjai in the Southwestern plain. There was a continous border warfare among the Kingdoms, andin 660A.D. Silla unified al I the kingdoms. Under the rule of Sill a the country made a remarkable progress politically, culturally and diplomatically. However, the last two hundred years of the Si I la Kingdom was a period of decadence and corruption which brought the Silla Kingdom the most tragic downfall in Korean history. Succeeding Silla was one of the Silla's Generals, Wanggon, who estab- 1 ished a new dynasty cal led Koryo, from which the name Korea of today is derived. The Koryo dynasty extended its rule over all Korea and its cultural influence was exported to China and Japan. During this period Buddhism had propagated widely among the common people, even though Confucian ethics and practices were the main order in the court. Sometimes, the religeous rivalry weakened the country resulting political disorder and con fusion. Uprisings by peasentry populace were common in those days. -The 24 Koryo had successfully defended its territory from the barbarians whose encroachment into northern Korea had spread during the period of Si Ila's downfal I. However, the Mongols rising from the remote interior of Mongolia had threatened every civilized country in the world, and Koreans had their share of fear and suffering from them. Koryo built numerous wal Is around the northern border, but no wall could stop the invader. Kublai Khan, who inherited the Mongol Empire, had learned of the skill of ship building by the Koreans, had ordered them to bui Id hundreds of boats in preparation for invasion of Japan. Several unsuccessful invasions of Japan by the Mongoles brought more misery to the Koreans than to the Mongol es themselves. Koryo's ruling power was greatly influenced by Buddhist priests, and the excessive demand of sacrifice in the name of religion created unrest and grievance among the people. Meanwhile, in the northern front, General Yi, who was one of the most brilliant and influential military leaders, back ed by the people, revolted against the court, and finally General Yi had established a new dynasty of Yi. The Yi dynasty remained in power until the Japanese occupation of Korea in 1910. The Yi dynasty promptly intro duced many reforms in the social. system. Improvement of the economic life of the common people was remarkable. The first decade of the Yi dynasty was the golden age of Korean culture. Political stability was once again restored, centered by the teaching of Confucian colts which influenced the establishment of the national standard of socio-ethics. There was a noted social and cultural progress under the Confucianist King, Se-Jong. King Se Jong directed scholars to simplify the native language which was the devel opment of the syllable system of written Korean language, "Hangul". Modern history records that the creation of 11 Hangul 11 was the first attempt to teach everyone within reach how to read and write. The Yi dynasty, from the close of the fourteenth century to recent times, marked the beginning of the modern age of Korea. The teachings of Confu cius were formed and the national institutions became permanent. Scholars became prominent in government during the Yi dynasty; whereas Koryo and al I other previous kingdoms were under the dominant power of military lead ers. The cultural growth and social development of the early days, however, was followed by foreign invasion. Toward the end of the sixteenth century, Japan became a military power under a warlord, Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who unified all the contending military groups in the Japan. Hideyoshi sent a number of envoys to the Korean king proposing that the two nations enter into an al I iance to crush China, but the Korean ruler declined, saying that the Korea had been friendly with China for centuries. The refusal to parti cipate with Hideyoshi in attacking China triggered ~assive Jap·:mese invasion of Korea in the spring of 1592. Having spent two centuries in peace and in 25 cultural rather than military activities, the Koreans were unprepared, so the battle had heavy odds against Korea. However, the invaders faced a fierce resistance from hastily organized Korean volunteers. The great Admiral Yi Sun-Sin d,efeated the Jap:::mese at sea withtheworld 1 sfirst ironclads, 11 turtle ship 11 (Kou-book-sun). The outcome of the war, which had lasted for near ly seven years, was significant for both countries. The Japanese experi enced a heavy loss of battles which then control led their aggressiveness for many centuries, and Korea realized its sense--0f nationalism through united effort in resisting the foreign invaders. Before Korea could recover from the wound of the battle, an invasion of Manchus took place in 1627. The Koreans had build many defense wal Is d1Jring this period. In view of these historic invasions by Mongols,Japanese a.,d Manchu, it became the nature of Korea to adhere to the pol icy of com plete isolation from the outside world for the sake of self-preservation.· It is also true that each time an invasion struck, the entire people united in defense of the country with whatever they had. The simple, loyal and fierce ly patriotic common men of Korea were always the masters of the country 1 s destiny. And these same common men never wasted their time whenever they saw injustice and deterioration of the ruler. They revolted and over threw the rulers many times. Beginning in 1872, the Japanese approached Korea with more real is tic assessment. The possession of Korea meant the control of vast, rich Man churia, and thus the Japanese sought an accord with Korea. In 1876, a treaty was signed with Japan. From this date on, the progressive elements in Korea, inspired by the Japanese, led a series of revolts against a con sevative court. In 1894 a war broke out between China and Japan. The result of the Sino-Japanese war brought a new kind of Japanese aggression in Korea. In the peace treaty of Shimonseki, Japan gained China 1 s ac quiescence to the maintainance of Japanese troops in Korea. One of the most significant turning points in Korean history was reached when Japan thus was al lowed to remain in Korea. The Russo-Japanese war once again forced the Korean Government into signing a treaty of al I iance with Japan. Namely, the Japan fought the war for the Korea 1 s neutrality, her independence and integrity. The Japanese won the war, and the Korea lost her freedom. President Theodore Roosevelt arranged the Treaty of Portsmouth which ended Russo-Japanese War. The treaty recognized Japan 1 s "paramount interest" in Korea. Many Koreans protested. But when the Japanese annexation of Korea became final in 1910 many fled the country. The final curtain for five hundred years of Yi dynasty fell. 26 During the thirty-five years of Japanese domination, Korea undergone extreme suppression and hardships. Both armed and passive resistance by Koreans continued at home and aboard. The hope for independence of Korea appeared in 1943, when President Roosevelt, Prime Minister Church ii I and Generalismo Chiang Kai-shek signed the Cairo Declaration. It declared the independence of Korea from Japan. In 1945, following Japan's defeat of the World War 11, the Korea regained her freedom from Japan but not the total independence. The unfavorable geopolitical position of Korea once again dominated the high I ight of international pol it'ics. Three years after the Japanese surrender, August 15, 1948, the Republic of Korea was inau gurated, and a few months later, ·on September 8, 1948, the Soviet control led North Korea es tab I ished the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The outcome of divided Korea was tragic---the war. The tragedy of the Korean W::Jr is manifested in a few simple statistical figures: more than 300,000 men were killed or wounded on the Korean soil. In 1953 the war ended. No one won the war, but Korean people suffered the heaviest loss. Korea is still divided. The Korean people are one people, ethnically and culturally. The unification of Korea is stil I far away. But the people never give up the hope that someday the country will be united, reclaiming the past glory of 11 the Land of Morning Calm .. 11 27 ., 미국의 한인 ••• 어껴|와 오풀 ” THEY CAME to AMERICA by Chun Soo Pyun 쇠풍 조선이 푼을 옐어 장상으호 빼휩파 상흥 해:1f 1881후 (펠 옳로 J.';후 후E;후 ) .::ti금9호 부틴 8~ 휴전, 짝 / 세7J 어I ;1~.짜웠다. 당시 조전은 자주좀합츄이 었으나 헝성상 또는 오l펀%· 으효는 濤뽑 ilf 홍송 9J 판져|어I 있는듯한 연상을 면치 봇하였다 :k‘짧촬 꿇빼‘어I 園따짜λ 天£혔쌓롤 항참함때, 짧.흥‘ 체츄은 J 챙잎훌 灌댐어l다 흘씁어I 청풍윤 현편풋이 자주종협폭압울 굉g홉 합때i i:lj훤f 서"J'e.r파 조섣파 회흥하꺼I 갚I었든짖of Zr. 이를 껴17f훈 하여 많은 of e_r파 쥬항쟁이 rrr주 에 롤어£매 되어 .t80..3 션 우퍼 」''JO'( 편 q~.zl 4펀깐 양4천 여명이 미주어I olt:'으호 틀어봐 ‘’웹tQIι 를 금꺼호 a/잠tf 짱방하껴f 되었다‘ 그월9f j표짝수준쓴 뽕칸 이하요 열장 7~상으호 릎뚫 불흥*{어 그 어느 재챔자 보다 피 땀흘러는 틴파꿇떻 다쩡써 뿔띤견 ~J 짧--올 횟어꼈 음 저쯤ctJ 휩I작되벼 I뜰잔씌 어떤 황껴쩍~I 짧t Of i!f.l!- 장잉'"01.9.191 - 일이 었웹 사상Of i!f t쩡다 28 그를중 퓨소수~r 」E융울 완얻t:~9~ 더 삐뻐<>~판 한다4 깨짧 불들이 끊은 강요를 자따 .t8.l.ι 션 부천 샘꿇어I 잉‘황f였으며 빼률 혼이 하 여 *을파 a~으로 퍼진한 망명생4 창앵이 7~주 원때포 εf흉 ~였다 . 그들은 생촬챙올 해환·~1r ~rtf여 최저 씬많I 노동올 발꺼l 뼈 야만 썼턴것<)[ ' - ~~'~' 원짱<>JC~ 하겠다. 그떠나 .1 당〈| 6얻따 용씬율 천!.<{하턴 죠전e_I Oj 여·t~한 기쏠이 짱었올lr 만무요 ..::1...냐 바라도 따햄히 농찬종~r 단I좀에 혜행암E씨 J들운 증가주 얄대에 정챔뻐 농l~ 에 종자ti.JI ,.<J작하여 오늘때 이를는 반Atill 동안 흔흔한 끼 l깐쓸 따 련 하어 놓았던 갓or다‘ 농자률 하떠 어느정도 J뜰~I 상황효 ~~.정 되지는 하었g나 언제싸 i.~c~없는 ιf룹을 가슴짚이 느쩌 뻐{출 ‘곁이 번 꺼엠 91 자픔을 조몫팡월 올 위해 회사 $~.썼~.t-1 우ct 그훈 를 ~r 아{종 o~좀 쩡진파 때한띤종 천종~r 공로자로 Jl.써야 겠다 J 그 어느 뚜강즐 다-떠·맨 폼행추사 보다도 증자주 싼 기숭배I 파l ;삼드싣 농 띤파 o~장 상{삼rt'' 푸멍 9-I 팡복 십자균애I C써한번 깜~~ 6~여 o~ 겠다r 여1r 필자 m량 J:30B 션 쭈퍼 134-5 션 까;([흘 이 i,:r기훈 정 하江 1:34/j 펀 땀퍼 1fJ55 편 까지흘 중항지로 J.955 ¥판 현재 까 지흘 혼성,,좀 두써 설명 하겠다 이 eYI 에는 전솔한 님f-.2~ 결이 .1.'107 펀 까지 한인이 장우 9포 이 띤 혐{깡9벼 그후효는 t命흉.tl~ 뿔포 들이 9fJf u센떼)포 피섣 하 었다Jr 111주어i 입좀 하었으 I셔 .<f. 하려; OJ\:1기~I 1 써I 훈률이 애풍 ~»좀 증 팡용열호 오늘-~I '1호I즐 - 건철 하었다 함of 결표 파때 향F는 ot.괴파, J랜+ 애적 하껴|갚 J붙률은7 연호*}파 현때깝각에 2힘웅 하 :7f.는 힘롤계 확얘 / 예리한 현패 갑'Zf9.l 쏘육자t' 우펴 젊은 째대가 A뼈를 or즐어 과아 가 알 찌I 채청자어| 보짧표 현째와 n때°'' 앙벙펀 X댐건결 애 빼 친 하는 껏맨l f히21 싸병이 ot결껴 ? ’ Ir wAs ALM。ST a century ag。l 1881, when the 뼈d。m 。f K。rea first 。pened her d。。r f。r the west. In 1882 the first treaty between |〈。rea and the United States was signed, and the f。||。wing 31 year Korea's first envoy to the United States, Min, Young Whan, ar rived in New York, landmarking the beginning of diplomatic relation between two countries. Between the years of 1903 and 1907 over four thousands Koreans landed in Hawaii, and the mainland in later years. Those first immi grants were very courageous in their adopted land, and forged from nothing to the prosperity wit~ their bare hand, and lots of sweat. To aid to the nature obstacle of the pioneer of the west, there was a lan guage barrier, customs were different, and they had hardly any ski 11 but a will to work. Many worked in mines and some became railroad hand. Life was harsh and the loads on their shoulders were heavy. More Koreans arrived when the Japanese annexation of Korea became final in 1910. Fortunately the Korean had an inborn skil I of farming, and the vast, uncultivated land of California was waiting for good workers. They began to move to the farm land, and gradual! y the land became prosperous. But in the heart of every Korean a zeal for independence of his motherland was deeply rooted. Literally, they worked and gave al I their earnings for the independence of Korea. They were more than willing to share a yoke of colonial people. There are unknown thousands in America and Korea whose unselfish devotion forthe cause of Korean independence deserve a highest praise and a recognition by the Korean descendants a II over the world. This writer devides the chronological development of the Korean community in America into three periods: 1903-1945, The Immigration year; 1945-1955, an era of student migration; and 1955- to present to be the period of disorder and reorganization. By the end of the Immigration Years, there were approximately ten thousands Koreans living in America, mostly in Southern and Central California. Many of them were young students seeking refuge from the Japanese, and were organizing and carrying out the independence movement. During those years courtship by photographs was popular, contributing immensely to the growth of the Korean Community -in 32 America. A large number of Korean families have settled in the Cen tral California and have established a distinction in the community with their remarkable accomplishment and contribution to the society. At the end of World War II, Korea obtained its liberation from Japan, and the United States established an interim military govern ment in South Korea. A sudden need for English speaking Korean and the western influence in Korea prompted many young Koreans to come to America to study. Many colleges and universities in America open ed the doors for these eager to learn. The majority of Korean students coming to America during this period reflected a sincerity and sense of strong dedication to their country, ever conscious of the duty and individual responsibility for the future of Korea. Through a mass mi gration of Korean students into America Korea had an opportunity to import western culture first hand. However, it must be also noted, that some of the students in America had less noble motives. The so cial status of a fortunate few who could afford to go aboard to study very often overshadowed its good intention. Later it became more of an intellectual fad and the attainment of a social distinction for the privileged few "going aboard to study . 11 The political instability, impatience fora completeand immediate independence, and frustration created a shadow and confusion in the heart of Korean people. The outbreak of the tragic Korean War had an immeasurable impact in the minds of young Koreans. The hope for a new independent nation, free and united, had shattered into pieces. A dreadful realization that Korea is too small a country and powerless to decide its own fate, but that she must become a pawn for the inter national politics and power struggle overwhelmed every Korean. Their future seemed uncertain, and they came to learn to I ive with their own weakness and helplessness. Yet, they learned through affluent Ameri can soldiers and friends all about America, filling with nothing but envies. An illusion that America is a land of plenty and a sanctuary from facing harsh reality of struggling world have produced an unusual 33 flow of Koreans into America. No matter what the motives were for coming to America, many young Koreans had the same awesome awareness of their identity an:l responsibility as the early Korean pioneers had, that one must bear the burden of his less fortunate brothers no matter where they are. It was, I would cal I, a beginning of period of disorder and reorganization of the Koreans in American society. The political and military tie· between Korea and the United States during and after the Korea War have mul tip I ied the population of Koreans in America. Uni ike early date when al I efforts by Korean in America were united for a single goal of obtaining independence of Korea, the individual Korenas of today are making remarkable pro gress in their own way in the society in which they are a part, wel I integrated in al I professions. Whatever the individual aim may be, it is indeed encouraging to note that the Korean descendants in America have been making a pos itive contribution in our society and which in turn will upraise the im a:Je of Korea as a whole. I consider it to be a great achievment by the Koreans in America today. Today there is a Korean Community Center in Los Angeles. Several Korean language newsp~pers are being published in the Los Angeles area alone. Churches and Civic organizations of Korean, all these can be sufficient proof to realize the future is very bright in the Korean Community in the United States. Since their arrival in this new land, Korean pioneers demonstrated a distinctive endurance for hardship, courage for justice, and a strong determination for I iberty and freedom, which their posterity takes a great pride to inherit these noble qualities of Korean. 34 The Directory Section 35 THE PROCEEDING DIRECTORY SECTION of this book is compiled from information gathered during past several months through an extensive survey. About 3000 questionaires were either mailed or passed on to all members of the Korean Community in Southern and Central California. A great effort was made in obtaining as comprehensive information as possible from these questionaires. The editor must ask, however, the readers patience and understanding should there be some errors in spelling, duplication, or omitting of names. Being this book is the first of its kind ever to be published by and for the Korean Community, the editor has encountered many problems some of which are rather unique in the Korean Community. The editor pledges that each succeeding volume will be better and more comprehensive---with your support and participation. The names and addresses in this directory are I isted alphabetically. There is more than one way of spelling a Korean name into English. Each person has his preference, and we followed his own spelling in the directory. However, in writing the names in Korean( Hangul), we took the I iberty of following the general rules of the Korean sp,elling, for instance, Choy, Choi, _ or Chey were al I translated in Korean as(:EI). The reader will notice some duplications of a person, particularly in married women. Uni ike the western way, many Korean women keep their maiden sur-name even after their marriage. It is also very common that sometimes they are known by maiden sur-name. Whenever such a dual sur-name appears we have I isted them in the directory twice accordingly. At the end of the directory section a blank page is provided for you to list names and addresses of your friends who are not in the directory this time. We do hope that the directory will serve the readers as it is designed for. 36 DIRECTORY SECTION A AHN, Ai Sung ol- oH -<1 1161 W. 37th Street - Los Angeles 7 RE5-7040 '- 0 AHN, Frank ol- ~ 2g3- 4419 W. No. . 75 The list of the members of Alumni and Alumane 'is partially completed this time. The Editor had planned an extensive and more inclusive list of both high schools and colleges in Korea and Southern California. The questionnaire distributed to the members of the Korean Community had a space for the informa tion on one 1 s educational background and school affiliation. But, it appeared to us that many people feel the educational background or his school affiliation is more of a private affiar. We have had, therefore, only limited success in getting infor mation for this section of the directory. For those who did give us information we have decided to complete this section ~ith whatever information we have in hand. At this time we have listed the high schools in Korea only. We hope to improve this section in our next issue. 76 ALUMNI and ALUMNAE of the High Schools in Korea AN-DONG HIGH SCHOOL Kwon, Tai Joo AN-SUNG HIGH SCHOOL Rhee, Thomas Y .
